Minneapolis, MN — January 8, 2026: Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) expresses deep outrage and sorrow following the killing of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother and community member, who was shot on January 7, 2026, by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Eyewitnesses and local officials have observed, amid horror and grief, ICE’s rapid escalation of violence and use of lethal force against Good, intensifying alarm over the aggressive and militarized conduct of immigration enforcement across the United States. And yet, this is far from being an isolated incident in ICE’s track record, both against immigrants and US citizens who stand up for their community.
“This tragedy is part of a disturbing pattern of violence tied to increasingly militarized ICE operations that endanger civilians and erode public trust,” said Roz Lee, NP’s Head of Mission in the United States. “From California to Minnesota and beyond, communities are being subjected to tactics that generate fear rather than safety, and that undermine the conditions needed for people to live, organize, and participate in civic life without violence.”
NP unequivocally denounces this use of lethal force and calls for the protection of civilians, civic space, and third-party observers and responders, including legal observers, journalists, human rights defenders, and community members engaged in peaceful civic action. The organization urges federal authorities and local leaders to ensure transparency in the investigation, uphold due process, and guarantee the right of the public to peacefully observe and document the actions of law enforcement and federal agents without fear of retaliation or harm.
Across the United States, NP and community partners are witnessing increased ICE activity and the broader militarization of immigration enforcement, including in California, Illinois and other states where raids and operations have created an atmosphere of fear and violence. These activities harm and violate the safety and human rights of observers and individuals, and of communities targeted by immigration enforcement activity.
While ICE frames these activities as in the interest of public safety, any migration enforcement that is carried out violently and indiscriminately is the exact opposite of public safety, both for US citizens who have the legal right to congregate, observe, and protest, and for immigrants, many of whom escaped violence and hoped to be safe when they made it to the U.S., only to face more violence.
